Dryness, fine lines and reduced firmness can change how our skin looks and feels. For people seeking a refreshed appearance, skin quality is often an important part of the conversation. Cellular Matrix combines platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from your own blood with non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid (HA). Here, we explain what each component contributes.
What does PRP do?
PRP is prepared by centrifuging a blood sample to obtain plasma containing platelets. Platelets release growth factors involved in tissue repair. In aesthetic treatment, PRP is used with the aim of supporting skin remodelling and collagen formation. A controlled skin-biopsy study reported increased collagen after PRP treatment, although individual results vary.[1]
Rejuva uses PRP from Regen Lab. This article compares Regen Lab PRP alone with Cellular Matrix, which combines PRP with non-crosslinked HA. PRP preparations vary between systems, so the comparison should not be generalized to every PRP product.
How is Cellular Matrix different?
Cellular Matrix uses a dedicated closed system to prepare PRP together with non-crosslinked HA. Its distinguishing feature is the addition of a water-binding component to PRP.[2]
| Feature | Regen Lab PRP alone | Cellular Matrix |
|---|---|---|
| Components | PRP from your own blood | Your PRP + non-crosslinked HA |
| Treatment concept | Platelet-derived signals for skin remodelling | PRP combined with HA’s water-binding properties |
| Added HA | None in the PRP-only treatment discussed here | Non-crosslinked HA included |
Why add non-crosslinked HA?
HA is naturally present in skin and binds water. “Non-crosslinked” means its molecules have not been chemically joined into a crosslinked network. It has different properties from many crosslinked fillers used for facial contouring.[2,3]
1. Supporting hydration
Adding HA brings a hydration-focused component to the treatment. A controlled trial of a different non-crosslinked HA product reported improvements in hydration and fine wrinkles. This supports the rationale for using HA for skin quality, but its numerical results cannot be applied directly to Cellular Matrix.[3]
2. Focusing on skin quality
The goal is improvement in the skin's appearance and feel. Significant hollows or structural volume loss may require another approach. Non-crosslinked HA can still cause temporary fullness or swelling after injection; it does not mean “no volume change.”
3. A combination supported by early clinical evidence
A 2021 randomized study of 93 participants compared three cheek-treatment sessions of PRP, HA or Cellular Matrix. The combination group showed greater improvements in patient-rated facial appearance and measured skin elasticity than either treatment alone.[4]
These findings are encouraging, but they do not establish that the combination outperforms every PRP preparation, multiplies collagen production or always lasts longer. The proposed supportive environment provided by HA should also be distinguished from the size of the benefit a patient actually experiences.
What should you consider before treatment?
If fine lines, dryness or reduced firmness concern you, a consultation can help establish whether this approach fits your skin and goals. Results and the number of sessions needed vary. Immediate swelling should not be mistaken for the final result.
Blood collection and injections can cause pain, redness, swelling, bruising and temporary bumps. Infection and hypersensitivity reactions are also possible. Using your own blood does not make the procedure risk-free. Please discuss your medical history, medications and allergies with your doctor.
At Rejuva, the consultation is an opportunity to discuss your concerns and the outcome you hope to achieve. Understanding the differences between PRP alone and PRP with HA helps you make an informed choice about your treatment.
